Influenza (Flu) Vaccine for 2025-26 Flu Season

NOW SCHEDULING FLU VACCINE FOR ALL AGES

You may now call and schedule your child's Flu Vaccine for the upcoming Flu Season.

Appointments begin at the end of September . Currently we have appointments available through October. We will continue to add new clinic dates as long as we have vaccine available.
We are encouraging our patients 12 years and up to get their Flu Vaccine at a local pharmacy, but they can get it in our office if needed .
We want to be sure to have plenty of vaccine available for children age 6 months to 11 years who may have a more difficult time locating Flu Vaccine.
As always, we will be offering Flu Vaccine to patients who find themselves in the office for a well visit or other office visit while supplies last. Time permitting, we will offer to siblings who may also be present in the office.
Flu Vaccine Clinic is for Flu Vaccine only.

RSV Antibody Vaccine for the 2025-26 RSV Season

NOW SCHEDULING RSV ANTIBODY VACCINE FOR INFANTS UNDER 8 MONTHS OLD

Quick review: There are two forms of RSV Vaccination.

RSV Antibody Vaccine - This vaccine is offered to infants at the start of RSV Season. It contains actual antibody to RSV and provides immediate help against RSV. RCAM recommends and offers this vaccine to our youngest patients.
Adult RSV Vaccine - This vaccine is offered to pregnant mothers and to the elderly. RCAM does not offer Adult RSV Vaccine but does encourage it for our pregnant mothers if youR obstetrician also recommends it for you.

RCAM will offer RSV Antibody Vaccine beginning on October 1, 2025 .
This vaccine is recommended for all babies less than 8 months old unless their mothers received adult RSV Vaccine between their 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.
Infants coming to our office for a well visit in October or November will be offered RSV Antibody Vaccine at their appointment.
Infants not coming to our office in October or November can schedule RSV Antibody Vaccine in our RSV Antibody Vaccine Clinic. These appointments are for RSV Antibody Vaccine only.
Infants who are considered High Risk are also eligible for RSV Antibody Vaccine at ages 8 through 19 months old . No baby is eligible once they turn 20 months old.

COVID-19 Vaccination

NOW SCHEDULING COVID-19 VACCINE FOR 6 MONTHS TO 11 YEARS OLD

Unfortunately, COVID Vaccination is complicated this year. For that reason, it can only be administered during a visit with one of our 9 pediatric providers.
We can only offer COVID vaccination to patients 6 months to 11 years old. If your child is 12 years old or older, they will have to get it elsewhere because we do not carry their dose.
COVID vaccine is FDA approved only for patients with high-risk conditions (listed below), but we can now offer COVID vaccine 'off-label' to anyone regardless of high-risk condition status ages 6 months to 11 years old.
If you have commercial insurance and your child is in a high-risk category, you can schedule an appointment with one of our providers to get the COVID vaccine now.
If you have Medicaid insurance, the CDC is not providing COVID vaccine for anyone yet. We are unable to order state COVID vaccine. We are unhappy being forced to offer different care to our patients because of what health insurance they have. High-risk conditions that make children eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine include:

Asthma (moderate to severe) : As a chronic lung disease, it increases the risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
Blood cancers and other immunocompromising conditions : This includes children undergoing chemotherapy, solid organ or blood stem cell transplant recipients, and those on immunosuppressive drugs.
Cardiovascular disease : This category includes congenital heart disease, heart failure, and cardiomyopathies.
Chronic kidney and liver diseases : These include conditions such as cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and autoimmune hepatitis.
Cystic fibrosis : This is a hereditary disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.
Diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2) : Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with increased risk of severe illness.
Disabilities : This includes a range of conditions such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Genetic, neurologic, or metabolic conditions : These can increase the likelihood of severe COVID-19.
Obesity : The risk of severe illness from COVID-19 increases sharply with higher body mass index (BMI >95th percentile).
Sickle cell disease : This genetic blood disorder can be linked to more serious outcomes from COVID-19.

To be clear, we recommend the unchanged vaccine schedule as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

For parents who choose not to follow this recommendation, we will require the following vaccines as a minimum:

By 12 months old:

Up to date with Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP) vaccine (3 doses)
Up to date with Pneumococcal (Prevnar) vaccine (3 doses)
Up to date with Haemophilus influenza type B (HIB) vaccine (3 doses)
Up to date with Polio vaccine (3 doses)
Up to date with Hepatitis B vaccine (3 doses)

By 15 months old, up to date with all above vaccines and:

Up to date with Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine (1 dose)

"Dr. Bob" Still a Big Part of Who We Try To Be at RCAM

July 19, 2022 - The suddenly saddened RCAM family announces the passing of Robert H. Fleming, MD .

Dr. Fleming started a solo, pediatric medical practice in Raleigh in the mid-1960s. His office grew into what we know today as Raleigh Children & Adolescents Medicine .

He was so humble and gentle , yet – speaking for those who have followed him at RCAM – he was such a big deal .

If you had a concern about your child, you were not alone – those who worked side by side with him say they could not imagine a more caring and conscientious physician. He was universally loved .

His family described him so well in this beautiful remembrance .

He was foundational to RCAM, and it is our hope that we can live up to his legacy – the legacy of a doctor caring for children the right way.

Curbside Clinic Is Taking a Break

April 26, 2022 - RCAM Curbside Clinic was an effort by our office to protect staff and patients during the heights of the COVID pandemic . On Monday, May 2, 2022, we plan to end Curbside Clinic and return to seeing sick patients indoors at both the Duraleigh and Brier Creek offices.

May we take this moment to remind you that we continue to offer sick appointments 364 days a year (not on Christmas - but we do offer sick visits on Saturdays, Sundays, and every other holiday).

RCAM Office Manager Debbie Maness Set To Retire After 42 Years

February 25, 2020 -This Friday, February 28, 2020 will mark the end of a grand era at Ralei gh Children & Adolescents Medicine.

After 42 years, RCAM office manager Debbie Maness is retiring to become the ultimate grandmother.

She Started as a Nurse; She Became our Office Manager

Debbie came to us as a nurse in 1978 from the Rex Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. At that time, our office was known as “Fleming, Edwards, and Goldman” – our three founding pediatricians who could also be known as the “Mount Rushmore of RCAM”.

After working at RCAM for about 10 years as a nurse, Dr. Fleming approached her about taking on a then newly created position: office manager.

I am sure that when she agreed to take that position, she could not have possibly imagined the volume of challenges that would come her way. There was always something new, and that new charge always fell in some form on the office manager.

Debbie successfully led RCAM over 4 decades as the practice of medicine changed dramatically. Throughout that time, she kept us on task, and she kept a good spirit.

RCAM therefore declares February 24 through 28 to be “Debbie Maness Week” and for it to be a time to celebrate Debbie’s 42 years of dedication, skill, and attitude.

1-Monday, February 24th – “Wear Your College Allegiance Day”

Debbie loves the N.C. State Wolfpack – for better and for worse.

She always pulls for her team, and-on Monday-we wore our college allegiance to work in her honor.

2-Tuesday, February 25th – “1978 Day”

On Tuesday, we’ll make attempts to remember the year that Debbie started her career at RCAM.

3-Wednesday, February 26th – “Red And White Day”

Another tip of the cap to Debbie’s Wolfpack – but, we’ve tried to keep it generic, so the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils among us won’t feel uncomfortable.

4-Thursday, February 27th – “Dear Debbie Day”

We’ll try to put our thoughts and feelings into words for our dear friend Debbie.

5-Friday, February 28th – “Let’s Drown Our Sorrows in Baked Goods”

Debbie is a baker and one time honored method of dealing with loss involves baked goods. We’ll honor Debbie’s hobby and fill our stomachs on her last day at RCAM.

Retired RCAM Pediatrician – Alan L. Goldman, MD (January 3, 1938 – April 17, 2020)

Alan Goldman, MD passed away late Friday night after battling an extended illness

April 20, 2020 – This past weekend RCAM lost one of our giants .

RCAM Pediatrician from 1971 to 2007

I have been lucky to have worked with some talented, good people. Alan most definitely was one of the most talented and one of the best .

He worked as a pediatrician at RCAM for 36 years .

He went to Harvard University for his undergraduate degree. Anyone who knew him found that easy to believe, because he was smarter than the rest of us . You picked up on that because it was obvious, not because he never flaunted it .

He was an accomplished pediatrician. He was the first pediatrician in Wake County who had specialty neonatology training and advanced neonatal intensive care in this area .

Never a Negative Word

Alan had a very pleasant and calm demeanor. I never saw him frazzled, and I never heard him say a bad or even negative word about anyone the entire time I knew him.

I will write that again just to be clear. I never heard him say a bad or even negative word about anyone .

We worked together for 11 years. There was a time when we shared an office. I saw him plenty away from work – typically, it involved some carpentry ( one of his many talents ).

Never. A. Bad. Word.

He Brought the Party

Alan was fun , and he was almost always working on something that would bring people together for the sake of entertainment.

So many of us have been regaled by something Alan planned : Poker nights, Christmas party games, Super Bowl games, March Madness brackets. The list goes on and on…

I knew Alan to always be preparing for the next gathering where everyone would be entertained by some sort of quiz, riddle, or trying to remember the words to “Good King Wenceslas” ( How many Jewish men know all the words to “Good King Wenceslas”? Alan did. ).

Our Hearts Are Heavy

Words are difficult at times like this. Alan was truly one of the RCAM greats .

He set a high bar for excellence in skill, attitude, and community.

Alan meant so much to our office, but – also – he meant so much to so many others.

Our hearts ache for the Goldman family.

Marjorie B. Carr, MD Retires After 40 Years at RCAM

"Dr. Muff" Leaves with the Love of her Patients and the Respect of her Fellow Pediatricians

August 28, 2019 – Short, meaningful story : One day in the late 1970’s, a medical student witnessed a pediatric resident spending her lunch with a young patient in the Burn Center at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital and thought to herself, “That’s the kind of pediatrician I would like to be.”

Story twist : Turns out that story includes two now former pediatricians from our office as the medical student was Leigh Lehan, MD and the pediatric resident was Marjorie Carr, MD .

Fast forward : June 22, 2018: Dr. Lehan retired from RCAM.

August 28, 2019: Dr. Carr retires from RCAM .

Summary : RCAM has said goodbye to two legends in the last 14 months.

Today was Dr. Carr’s last day. Tomorrow will be a different day for her. And it will be a very different one for our office .

Dr. Carr brought real passion and skill for pediatric medicine to RCAM when she arrived in 1979 . if you are wondering about her impact, check out the reactions to a recent Facebook post about her nearing retirement:

RCAM Remembers Pegg Wilkinson

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around .

April 21, 2017 – Peggy Wilkinson worked as a nurse at Raleigh Children & Adolescents Medicine from December 30th, 1985 through December 31st, 2011 . Peggy passed away this past Saturday morning.

This jarring news has shaken those at RCAM who worked with her. Peggy spent 26 years with us.

We knew Peggy as a wife and a proud mother. It was clear to her co-workers that she loved her son Sam and spending time with her family was very important to her.

Over 26 years, we knew her as a friend.

Office manager Debbie Maness remembered that Peggy was among the first to bring you a casserole when preparing your own meal was being overshadowed by illness, grief, or (in better times) a new baby. Pediatrician Muff Carr remembered – among other things – Peggy’s cranberry salad at office potlucks . Peggy was also a fierce competitor when it came to our white elephant office holiday party.

But we knew Peggy best as a nurse .

Twenty-six years represents a lot of phone calls trying to help a weary parent on the other end of the phone line. It includes countless efforts to ease an anxious child through their visit to the doctor.

Measuring growth. Assessing hearing and vision. Collecting and performing labwork. Giving vaccines. Documentation. Peggy was said to be a “meticulous and tireless worker.”

She knew a nurse’s workday focused on doing what needed to be done to help our most valued – our children. And she loved it.

The other morning as the news spread through our office, Debbie thought for awhile and then it came to her. She said, “Peggy loved being a nurse.”

That is one way we will definitely remember our dear friend Peggy.

50 Years and Counting: RCAM Celebrates a Milestone

Since 1966: RCAM Celebrates a Big Birthday

November 17, 2016 – This past Saturday night, RCAM gathered together 13 current and former pediatricians (pictured above) and about 50 current and former staff who along with significant others marked the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Raleigh Children & Adolescents Medicine .

In 1966, Dr. Bob Fleming started a solo pediatric practice on Clark Avenue near Cameron Village in a 4-room house. It wasn’t long before he was joined by Dr. Stephen Edwards and they moved to a location close to the “Old” Rex Hospital on St. Mary’s Street. In the early 1970s, Dr. Alan Goldman joined the group to became member number three of “The RCAM Big Three”.

Drs. Edwards and Goldman both addressed Saturday night’s crowd and shared many of those early memories. Dr. Edwards also spoke about the future of the practice of pediatrics when he said, “ As long as we take care of children in the best way possible – as long as we take care of each other – and work toward the betterment of all children – we will always have a job and always feel good about that job .”

Dr. Rick Gessner, current Managing Partner of RCAM, also spoke about our past, present and hopes for the future . He challenged our current employees to seize the potential of our daily face-to-face encounters with our patients and their families: “ How you greet them and smile and explain and listen and treat makes a difference in the life of a child .”

Dinner was served by Simply Delicious Catering at the City of Raleigh (COR) Museum. The museum’s displays were a timely backdrop for the evening. Dr. Gessner referenced one of them in his talk.

Debbie Maness – our current Office Manager who has intimate knowledge of the last 38 years of RCAM – said, “ Saturday was a great time – great to see [our current employees] mix with so many wonderful people from our past .”

RCAM Special Guests that night included:

“The RCAM Big Three” and their significant others looked great and seemed to be continuing to enjoy retirement:

Dr. Bob Fleming and his wife Nancy Jo – Bob still performs physicals for our armed services
Dr. Stephen Edwards and his wife Sylvia – Sylvia has seemed to give up retirement in favor of working with our front office staff
Dr. Alan Goldman and his wife Jill – Alan reminded us of his one-of-a-kind Christmas Party games. He initiated a holiday game that really needs to return. It was called “Find Your Bonus Check” and involved hiding individual bonus checks in unpredictable places in the office (let your mind wander). His annual quizzes were famous for asking things like “How many doors are in our office?” and “Finish this verse of ‘Good King Wenceslas’.”

Two former “Head Nurses”:

Dixie Kennedy and her husband Melvin – Dixie was Dr. Fleming’s first hire and she set up the nursing program at RCAM
Shirley Gower and her husband Clarence – Shirley was an unflappable, longtime head nurse

Two former “Weekend Nurses” who were known to bring ease to everyone they encountered (a wonderful trait for a weekend nurse)

Brownie Parker and her husband Wayne
Wyndee Langdon and her husband Andy

Two other blasts from the not so far past:

Cater Riggan – Cater handled our dealings with Cigna at a time when that was not easy and was also known to keep us all straight at all times (I think its called “gravitas”)
Beverly Stinson and her husband Jim – Beverly was a longtime nurse who never met a stranger

We would like to formally thank all associated with RCAM – current and past – employees and spouses – patients and their families. Taking care of children in the best way possible – working toward the betterment of all children – that requires a total team effort. And so does taking care of each other.

Welcome Our Newest Pediatrician – Lillian R. Harris, MD – On Today – Her First Day At RCAM

Dr. Lily Harris - Today is the First Day of the Rest of your Life!

September 14, 2015 – This morning we welcomed Dr. Lily Harris as she arrived for her first day working as a pediatrician at Raleigh Children & Adolescents Medicine .

We make the distinction “first day working” here because this is not her first visit to RCAM.

A detail that has been stated before and will likely come up again: from early childhood though her teen years, Dr. Lily Harris visited RCAM as a patient!

In short, after medical school and her pediatric residency at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University , she and her husband had a baby and she spent a year working as a pediatrician in Goldsboro before beginning this morning at RCAM.

We are really excited for her to join our practice.

Two Doctors with the Same Last Name

Some of you seasoned RCAM families have likely noticed that we now have two pediatricians who go by “Dr. Harris” – there is the new Dr. Lily Harris as well as not so new Dr. Todd Harris (no relation).

When asked about having two pediatricians with the same last name, RCAM Office Manager Debbie Maness says, “Our plan now is to be patient and work through any confusion that may occur.”

Rumor has it that they hare investigated the use of a nickname.

Gessner Family Return From 2 Year Medical Mission in Kenya

September 2, 2015 – One year ago today came the answer to a question RCAM got asked probably daily for the prior two years: When is Dr. Gessner going to be back?

On July 9, 2012, Dr. Rick Gessner, his wife and their 3 children began a two year medical mission. Dr. Gessner treated a wide range of pediatric medical conditions at a hospital in Kijabe, Kenya. RCAM got Dr. Gessner back to our Brier Creek office on September 2, 2014 . We were (and still are) very proud of what he and his family accomplished there. It was very exciting for the RCAM family to have them back home in Raleigh.

I asked Rick to comment on the milestone and this is what he had to say:

“ I have really enjoyed being back in Raleigh, seeing old patients, and meeting many new ones this year. Our family has enjoyed the warm welcome home and we look forward to being here for many years to come…although we want to sneak back to Kenya for some visits from time to time! ”
