Dr. Richard Gessner, M.D.

Richard (Rick) Gessner was born and raised in Raleigh. After earning his B.S. in Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill he served for four years as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He then returned to Chapel Hill for medical school on a Navy scholarship and received his M.D. in 1995. He completed the residency training in pediatrics in Washington, D.C. at the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1998 and achieved board certification in pediatrics that same year. He completed his naval service with a four year tour at Naval Hospital in Charleston, S.C. While in Charleston he was appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina and participated in the training of residents and nurse practitioners. His wife, Sarah, is also a pediatrician. They were married in 1994 and have three children, Ted, Anna, and Emily.
