Dr. Todd Harris

5FRI

Today is Friday, May 6, 2016

  • We sign off our answering service at 8:00 am to take calls directly from our office until we finish our evening clinic (typically around 7:00 pm).
  • Also – today – two big annual events have fallen for the first time in our 50 year history on the same day!

1. It’s Nurse Appreciation Day

Bev with BorderWhen you ‘Google’ “quotes about nurses” it is clear people really like their nurses.

It makes sense. They often are how things work in healthcare. Typically, it is the nurse who has the most face-to-face contact with the patient. The word nurse is also a verb – we all know good things have happened when someone is “nursed back to health.”

At RCAM, it is no different. We are thankful for our group of competent and caring nurses. We are dependent on that group. We simply don’t work at all without their special set of skills.

Say “Thank You” to a nurse today (or give them some chocolate – they seem to really like chocolate).

We are taking them to the Kanki today for lunch (they insisted on the Kanki after the Front Office had such a great time last week)

2. It’s Sport-A-Shirt-Share-A-Night Day

2016 Sport a ShirtWe have relaxed our dress code today and are wearing t-shirts with this logo on the front in support the Ronald McDonald House. Physicians can – and do – say a lot about the restaurant. We don’t need to cover that again – do we?

The Ronald McDonald House charity supports families who are going through their most difficult times – during the illness of a loved one (like nurses – see above).

RCAM supports this effort each year and get to wear a t-shirt to work (a “win-win”).

And now, a few details about other parts of our day:

Baby Pink Tub

March 9, 2016 – We recently got very excited about hiring a new nurse – she is also a lactation consultant and that brings our number of lactation consultants on staff at RCAM to four.

There is a downside though: her name is Shannon.

Nothing against the name – ‘Shannon’ is a perfectly good name – but that puts us now at three nurses who answer to the name ‘Shannon.’ There is a slight concern that this could lead to some confusion (kinda like having two pediatricians named ‘Dr. Harris’).

That got us thinking: What are the popular names today – not just national trends – but what is the local trend here in the Raleigh area?

We looked at all newborns in our practice in the year 2015 to find Raleigh’s most popular baby names.

Here are our results:

Monday Notes: Carolina Panthers Edition

Written by Dr. Todd Harris

Girl Panther football

Okay, so this is not a sports blog – but where a child is involved – maybe a pediatrician should comment:

What is not to like about this reaction from the Carolina Panthers 31-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks?

Cam Newton and the Panthers have a tradition: after scoring a touchdown, they hand the ball off to a child in the stands.

As a pediatrician and a parent (and a Panther’s fan), I think this is a great idea. Rather than taking the ball home to let it gather dust in some trophy case (or a closet, because in the case of Cam Newton, he could collect quite a few of these over the years), why not make some child’s day (which we know makes some parent’s day as well)?

When you see the child’s face – you know that there is something extra special about the look of unbridled joy from a child.

Go Panthers! Keep pounding!!

And now, back to the daily lineup…

Calling All Cards

Written by Dr. Todd Harris

Calling all cards

December 7, 2015It is starting to appear. Like previous years, the arrivals will no doubt be slow at first but then show steady, daily increase – as each week passes, more and more will come.

No, I am not talking about the flu. This is something else – something much safer and much more fun:

A favorite RCAM holiday tradition has always been receiving holiday cards from our families.

[WARNING: The following could sound like begging.] If your family practices the tradition of sending a holiday card – particularly if it includes some version of a family photograph – please consider sending one our way:

Raleigh Children & Adolescents Medicine
Holiday Card Department
3100 Duraleigh Road, Suite 300

Raleigh, NC 27612

Know that one of the best parts of this tradition is displaying the cards in our office.

Plus, we’ve taken it a step further: If you have sent a card in the last 10 years, it has been saved and cataloged so that each year’s card can be displayed together.

Finally, It doesn’t have to be a Christmas Card – any holiday will do – or just send a picture. We really just get a kick out of this visual of our families through the years.

TOY HALL OF FAME 2015 BRACKETOLOGY

Written by Dr. Todd Harris

Bracket

November 5, 2015 – You may recall an earlier post about the 12 finalists for this year’s 2 new inductions into the Toy Hall of Fame.

Those 2 new inductions will be announced sometime today. This morning, I would like to present the 2015 RCAM Toy Hall of Fame Bracketology.

It works for college basketball. Let’s see how it works for toys.

The 12 finalists have been divided into 4 Regions with 3 toys in each. Since there are 3 per Region, 1 of those 3 gets a bye to the second round with a chance to go to The Toy Final Four.

The Upper Region

Eighties

November 1, 2015 Hope your family had a safe and fun Halloween.

You can’t take that for granted because we all know that Halloween can get ugly.

Take – for example – the competition between the Nurses at our Duraleigh and Brier Creek offices – this ongoing battle turns fierce this time every year.

October 6, 2015 – We can have fun here, right? We don’t always have to have that heavy, guilt-inducing medicine talk, do we?

Ok, now that we have that straight…

The National Toy Hall of Fame (HOF) is located in Rochester, NY and housed in The Strong® – a “highly interactive, collections-based museum devoted to the history and exploration of play.”

The Toy HOF annually names 12 finalists for induction and then two or three are selected for induction.

This year’s 12 finalists have already been announced and include: American Girl dolls, Battleship, coloring book, Jenga, PLAYMOBIL, puppet, scooter, Super Soaker, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, top, Twister, and the Wiffle Ball.

RCAM takes notice of such things because we know that the work of childhood is play. Where there are children, there is play; and where there is play, there are toys. It is not a stretch to think that that has always been true (EDITOR’S NOTE: this is true – note that “stick” is already in the Toy Hall of Fame).

Therefore, in honor of outstanding achievement in the field of Toys, RCAM announces a 3 part series:

National Toy Hall of Fame

We will find out on Thursday, November 5 at 10:30 am which two or three from that list will be recognized with permanent inclusion in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

Which two are most deserving of this honor? Participate in our poll and next week read one pediatrician’s take on who should be added to the Toy Hall of Fame:

This poll is closed! Poll activity:
Start date 10-05-2015 11:52:38
End date 05-11-2015 11:34:27
Poll Results:
Select the two (2) toys you think are most deserving for entry into the National Toy Hall of Fame:
