Marjorie Carr, M.D. A native North Carolinian, Muff Carr attended UNC-Chapel Hill for undergraduate, medical school, and residency. A later degree in theology came from Duke (much to her Duke husband's delight). She is active at Christ Episcopal Church, and enjoys gardening, biking, jogging, boating, needlework, and her two dogs in her spare time. She is board certified in pediatrics. |
Leigh S. Lehan, M.D.Dr. Lehan is a native of Hickory, N.C. and received her B.A. from Meredith College. She worked as a psychiatric social worker at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, N.C. before returning to school and receiving her M.D. from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Lehan did her residency at Duke University and served as chief resident there. She joined Raleigh Children in 1984, and is board certified in pediatrics. She is married to Tim Lehan of Smith Anderson Law firm and they have three teenage children. Dr. Lehan is one of the founding mothers of Playspace of Raleigh, an active member on several PTA boards, and a consultant for the Association of Retarded Citizens.

Thomas Sena, M.D.Dr. Thomas Sena grew up in upstate New York. He moved to North Carolina in 1981 to do his residency in pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center. In 1984, he completed his residency and achieved board certification in pediatrics. Prior to that, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Amherst College in Massachusetts with a degree in Biology in 1977. He earned his M.D. degree from Albany Medical College in 1981. While there, he played rugby and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He enjoys fishing, gardening and astronomy. He attends Edenton Street United Methodist Church with his wife, Sandy, and their three children and serves on the church's Health Care Committee. |
J. Todd Harris, M.D.Todd Harris grew up in Raleigh. He left in 1985 to attend Transylvania University in Lexington, KY for his undergraduate degree where he enjoyed regular attendance in Rupp Arena for Kentucky basketball games. He returned to the Carolinas in 1989 to complete medical school at East Carolina University and pediatric residency at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Although it was difficult to leave Charleston, the draw of coming home brought Dr. Harris back to Raleigh when he joined Raleigh Children in 1996. He is board certified in pediatrics. Dr. Harris is an active member of North Raleigh Church of Christ. He is married with two children. |
Richard Gessner, M.D.Rick Gessner was born and raised in Raleigh. After earning his B.S. in Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill, he served as a U.S. Navy officer for four years. He then returned to Chapel Hill and received his M.D. in 1995 on a Navy scholarship. He completed residency training in pediatrics in Washington, D.C. at the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1998 and achieved board certification in pediatrics. He completed his naval service with a four year tour at Naval Hospital in Charleston, S.C. While there, he was appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Medical University of SC and trained residents and nurse practitioners. His wife, Sarah, is also a pediatrician. They married in 1994 and have three children. |
Jamila Fletcher, M.D.Dr. Fletcher (formerly known to our group as Dr. Forte) is a native of Raleigh. She earned her B.S. degree from Duke University where she was a member of the track team, specializing in high jump. She earned her medical degree from a rival school, the UNC School of Medicine, and remained in Chapel Hill for her pediatric residency training. In addition to being board-certified in pediatrics, she also speaks conversational Spanish. The newly named Dr. Fletcher rejoined the RCAM family in 2009 after a one year out-of-state hiatus. She has a husband, Craig, and three children. |
Ben M. Meares, M.D.Dr. Meares is another native North Carolinian and a diehard Tarheel. After earning a degree in Business Administration from UNC-CH, he briefly worked in the business field before returning to Chapel Hill for his medical degree. Dr. Meares completed his residency in Greenville, SC before returning to the Tarheel State to join Raleigh Children and Adolescents Medicine. He and his wife, Laurie, have four children and are members of Bayleaf Baptist Church. Dr. Meares enjoys time with his family and working on home improvement projects. |
Rasheeda T. Monroe, M.D.Dr. Monroe was born in Florida and lived there until her family relocated to Greenville, North Carolina where she attended high school. She earned her B.S. degree at East Carolina University where she was a member of the Pure Gold Dance Team. While earning her M.D. from the Brody School of Medicine at ECU, she was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. In 2008, Dr. Monroe completed her pediatric residency at UNC-CH and then joined the practice at RCAM. She is married to former Pirate football player Kevin Monroe and has two sons. She enjoys spending time with her family, dancing, reading and traveling.

Sarah E. Owrey, M.D.Dr. Owrey was born and raised in a small town in Northern Michigan just an hour or so south of the Upper Peninsula. She attended Albion College, a small liberal arts college in Michigan, and graduated with a biology and chemistry minor. After college, she entered medical school at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. She relocated to North Carolina for residency and completed her pediatrics training at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem in June of 2009. She met her husband, Ryan, during her residency and was married in October of 2008. They have a dog named Boomer and a cat named Snickers and enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling. Sarah also enjoys Broadway musicals and reading. |
